Deep Water Summer Slabs: Crappie Bite Best at Dawn
Clarks Hill Recreation Area - McCormick, SC
Crappie fishing on Clarks Hill Lake is steady but requires a deeper approach during these hot July days. Most of the action is coming from 18 to 25 feet of water, especially around submerged brush piles, standing timber, and channel ledges. The key is to fish early—crappie are most active during the first few hours after sunrise before retreating deeper as the sun climbs.
Anglers are finding success using live minnows on tight lines or small jigs in white, chartreuse, or pink. Vertical jigging and slow trolling are both effective, especially near the Little River and Soap Creek areas. Electronics are a must right now—locating structure and suspended fish is half the battle.
As water temps hover in the low to mid-80s, midday action is limited, so plan your trip early or try some night fishing near dock lights for bonus bites. The crappie are there—you just have to fish smart, stay cool, and stay patient.
